Description:

The country is described as split into one third of each of these country types Gidgee, Iron Bark/Box and Spinifex. This makes it a very diverse property and with the present water infrastructure and fencing the cattle now have access to areas of country where previously they only accessed in the wet season. The scope and mix of country enables owners/managers to undertake a complete livestock enterprise from breeding to fattening.

The Spinifex country traditionally has been used as breeder country as it is safe and reliable. Consistently the calves off the cows from this country are as good as calves on cows on the other country types. This country is improved with the Stylos and Wynn Cassia, cows breed and rear quality calves in this country and dry cattle fatten. The vendor’s use of lick and the TNN  Australia liquid supplement the Spinifex country is the country that sticks with you when it gets dry, as throughout this country and the Box/Iron-bark country as well as the introduces legumes there is a lot of edible bush which is a big plus in dry times.

Caledonia has never been destocked since the vendors have owned it. (purchased in 2002)

Clearing & Blade Ploughing:

Approximately 9,713 Hct (24,000 Acres) ( Exact area to be confirmed) is White on Map. Most of this has been Pulled or Blade Ploughed. The vendor’s had planned future blade ploughing for all the Gidgee country. The results obtained with the country done so far has increased the carrying capacity as well as the turnoff period. The northern side of Reilly’s paddock stands out as a good example of the benefits of blade ploughing, here a narrow section was ploughed and it is now the bull paddock. Through the fence is the same country yet to be ploughed.

Grasses and Seeding:

Buffle Grass, Urochloa Grass, Bambatsi Grass, Wynn Cassia, Secca, Verano and Siran Stylos. The Stylos & Wynn Cassia Legumes are continually being sewn whenever loose lick is fed out. Because of the hard seed coat, using cattle to spread these seeds has been very successful. Caledonia has been lightly stocked and with good seasons for the last 3 years the country has not been under stress; hence the pasture and grasses have also not been under pressure. According to the vendor some paddocks could soon do with another round of pulling. When originally pulled by the owner there was no quality grasses or legumes in the country. When the paddocks were pulled, grasses and legumes were spread and they have now dispersed very well. Another pull in years to come would loosen the soil and only improve and spread the new grasses and legumes that are established.

Waters, Troughs, Tanks and water Delivery:

There are 5 flowing bores on Caledonia, of which 3 are capped, one flows into a bore drain and the 5th, which was a sub bore but now has started to flow because of the capping of a large number of bores in the Great Artesian basin. It is equipped to supply troughs and tanks. The majority of Poly Pipe installed is 63 ml, the troughs are concrete and the tanks are mainly 5,000 gallon Poly for the water infrastructure improvements undertaken. Prior the vendor’s ownership the property was basically watered exclusively by bores drains.

Special mention should be made about the quality of the bore water, Caledonia is positioned in a section of the GAB where the water is spring like quality with little or no odour, does not stain as some bore water does and as it is only slightly warm no cooling tanks are required to provide safe stock water. Caledonia is extremely well watered with a quality water infrastructure.

  • Woolshed Bore, (natural pressure no pump required) The 63ml pipeline from Woolshed bore runs south supplying water to several of our fenced exclusion paddocks, Homestead Gardens and Surrounds, Cattle Yards and bottom Reilly’s paddock. Front Paddock is also supplied by the Woolshed Bore with a Solar Pump sending water to another tank and trough in the middle of the paddock.
  • Number 4 Bore, the backbone of the middle and western side of the property. Numerous tanks and troughs are supplied by this bore. It is equipped with a diesel motor setup with timer. There is a back up system of Poly tanks that fill while the pump is running and then supplies water to all the tanks and troughs in this system on an as need basis. Some of the tanks and troughs on this line are also naturally supplied with water from the pressure of the bore.
  • Mutual Bore, this is a share bore servicing Mutual Bore Paddock at the northern end of the property. The tanks and
troughs on this 63ml poly line is supplied by the pressure from the bore, again no pump required.
  • No 7 Bore, as mentioned this was a Sub bore when the vendor’s purchased the property but now is a flowing bore. It is equipped
and supplies water to troughs in Scrubby Hole and Tony’s Dam paddocks.
  • Peters Bore, this is the only bore that flows into bore drains, one drain services Peters Bore Paddock and the other drain
called Straight drain services the blade ploughed country along straight drain.
  • Lagoon paddock Solar Pump, supplies water from the Lagoons to the top cattle yards, and surrounding paddocks.
  • Front Paddock Solar Pump, draws water from tanks on the Woolshed bore pipe line, pumps water approx 3 k to a tank and trough in the middle of front paddock Blade Ploughed country.
  • Homestead, Guest Accommodation, Workers Accommodation, Sheds and Cattle Yards are all supplied water by Woolshed Bore.
