A Town Built on Gold
Known affectionately as “The World” Charters Towers has a story that begins with a thunderstorm. In late 1871 prospectors Hugh Mosman, George Clarke, John Fraser and a horseboy named Jupiter were searching for scattered horses after a fierce storm when they stumbled upon gold near what is now the intersection of Mosman Street, Rainbow Road and Black Jack Road. The party returned to Ravenswood to register their find and Charters Towers was born. What followed was one of Queensland’s most remarkable gold rushes transforming a remote bush camp into a prosperous city that rivalled any in the country.
A Thriving Regional Centre
More than 150 years on Charters Towers remains one of Queensland’s most self-sufficient regional communities. The town offers diverse retail, manufacturing and transport services alongside well established health, education, cultural and recreational facilities. For families and businesses looking to relocate to regional Queensland, Charters Towers delivers a quality of life that is hard to match at this price point. Rural lifestyle properties and residential holdings in and around the town continue to attract strong interest from buyers across Australia and overseas.
The Cattle Marketing Hub of North Queensland
For those involved in the beef cattle industry Charters Towers is the undisputed centre of North Queensland’s rural property market. The weekly liveweight selling centre handles store, slaughter and stud stock sales and serves as a major live export depot for cattle loaded at Townsville port. Combined with the JBS Meatworks in Townsville the region offers unmatched infrastructure for beef producers. Grazing properties and cattle stations in the Charters Towers region are among the most sought after rural property investments in Queensland with holdings ranging from small grazing blocks to large scale stations running thousands of head.
Proximity to Townsville
Townsville lies just 135km to the north east and as one of Australia’s largest and fastest growing regional cities offers buyers and investors access to a population of 200,000 with a full range of industry, services, employment and lifestyle amenity. For rural property buyers the proximity to Townsville is a significant advantage providing easy access to major transport, health services, education and a international airport – all within comfortable reach of a rural or lifestyle property base in the Charters Towers region.
